Twenty Penn Manor middle schoolers learned about the construction industry directly from professionals in the field by attending “Construction Wars,” a career exploration event held October 15 through 17 at the Keystone Center for Construction Careers in Manheim.
Ten students each from Manor and Marticville Middle Schools participated, building wooden benches, testing electrical circuits, making sheet metal tool boxes and trying their hands at brick laying under the guidance of professionals in the construction industry.
They also learned about plumbing and HVAC jobs and the education and training programs available for the trades through Lancaster County Career & Technology Centers and the Keystone Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC).
The goal of the program was to show students “that they can get a high-paying, in-demand job without a four-year college degree,” said Danielle Rogers, Manor Middle school counselor. “An education and training program at ABC in construction trades may be the right fit for them.”
Construction Wars participants from Manor were Andy Acevedo, Carter Basile, Omar Beard, Jacob Henry, Alex Joseph, Kerianni Gonzalez, Alliana Leschke, Kiara Maduro, Ivan Rivera and Yarelyn Vargas.
Marticville participants were Aiden Brown, Jaiden Campbell, Lane Charles, Angel Fairchild. Kayleigh Forrest, Colton Fry, Brady Heisey, Caleb Herr, Lyle Hollandsworth and Emma Jayne.
Many thanks to those who made this opportunity possible for our students.
